Animal Welfare Services is a local group dedicated to networking all the Pet Professionals in the area together. We hope to network vets, pet store owners, rescue volunteers, shelter workers, boarding kennel owners and pet sitters, groomers and more. We are in the process of getting our 501c3 (should be done by February 1 2008) and hope to have a local shelter by January 2009. I am the Internet Coordinator for Animal Welfare Services. We are *not yet* a shelter. Our volunteers are individuals who take animals into their own homes as they are able. Many times the animal stays in it's current home until a new home is found. Email: animalwelfareservices@hotmail.com PAWS & More Animal Shelter is a private, adoption-guarantee shelter located in Washington, Iowa. “PAWS” stands for “Providing Animals With Shelter,” while “More” stands for the loving care and treatment we give to every animal who passes through our doors. Located in Washington, Iowa, PAWS & More is a non-profit shelter with 501(c)(3) tax status. The shelter's income comes primarily from adoption fees, donations, grants, and fundraising activities. The shelter's staff comprises one full-time and three part-time employees. The remaining work is done by volunteers. The shelter takes in, on average, 550 animals each year. The animals come primarily from Washington County, Iowa. Housing at the shelter is limited to approximately 100 cats and 20 dogs. Not only does PAWS provide homes for stray pets and unite lost pets with their owners, we educate the public who have questions on pet care, and we assist law enforcement with neglect cases, citizen complaints, and family emergency issues. The shelter screens potential adopters carefully with the goal of our animals going to good, loving, forever homes. All animals have passed behavior testing, are spayed/neutered, and vaccinated before they are allowed to be adopted. It is the policy of PAWS & More Animal Shelter to provide humane care and treatment to all animals needing protection in the area it serves, to seek suitable homes for animals without owners, and to provide euthanasia only when medically or behaviorally necessary.. Our contact info is below and animals available for adoption can be

Many of us have known one another for years from helping with various
local rescue groups, shelters, and national breed rescue groups. All
of us have had the experience of coming across a dog that needed help
that didn’t have a rescue group that could take them into their
program. We were finding that regardless of breed or whether a dog is "purebred",
there are many of us out there who wanted to help these dogs and need
a place to list them. Therefore, we decided to start Midwest Dog Rescue
Network to help rescuers help dogs that would otherwise "fall through
the cracks". We are a collection of rescuers and some good-hearted
individuals, who are just trying to help as many good dogs find homes
as possible. H.E.A.R.T. Hardin Eldora Animal Rescue Team We are state inspected and licensed. Our purpose is to promote spay
and neuter, prevent cruelty and neglect, educate the public, practice
Trap, Neuter, Return of feral cats, reunite lost pets with their owners
and rescue and rehome abandoned and unwanted animals. We do this out
of our homes with limited resources, no outside funding and little community
support. Financial and space constraints keep the number of animals we
are able to help much smaller than we would like. No animal is ever 'put
to sleep' to make room for another! We are not 501(c)3 yet but we are
definitely non-profit! All animals are spayed or neutered and fully vetted
before being offered for adoption. Look for us @ www.heart-eldora.petfinder.com Our website is petfinder.com. Our contact information is 1124 Water St., Alden Iowa, 50006; (515)859-7770; greenbelthumane@wmtel.net. A description of our focus: Our focus is on seeking suitable homes for homeless animals, vaccinating and altering animals at our shelter and returning animals to their owner. We are one of 800 no-kill facilities in the United States. We deal primarily with cats and small animals but are willing to help place dogs. You mentioned articles. I do not have the articles with me to cite, but two points of interest. Cats only meow to humans, not other cats. Also if you have a cat that likes to scratch furniture, use citrus scented cleaner/polish. Cats do not like the smell of citrus. JRT
